history
The name "Fonréaud", formerly "Font-réaux", means "Royal Fountain". Legend has it that an English king and his entourage stopped at Fonréaud and found a source of water to quench their thirst. The cool spring still flows at the bottom of the park. The current castle, built in 1855 to the plans of architect Louis Garros, will charm you with its elegant architecture. In late 1962, Léo Chanfreau was captivated by the place and bought the estate, deciding to settle there with his family. Today, Jean and Marie-Hélène Chanfreau continue his work. This classic, round and refined Médoc wine is widely recognized by its peers, classified as Cru Bourgeois Supérieur in 1932 and 2003, a Cru Bourgeois member of the Alliance of Crus Bourgeois du Médoc, and a member of the Union des Grands Crus de Bordeaux. It is an essential wine, appreciated by connoisseurs.
Vineyard
The vine is cultivated with great respect for the balance of the plant and its environment in order to obtain well-aerated foliage and a regular load of grapes ripening slowly in the autumn sun. Depending on their nature, the plots are either grassed or plowed.
Winemaking
From the moment of harvest, the grapes undergo rigorous selection. After a light crushing and destemming, the must is directed to small, temperature-controlled tanks that allow for perfect control of fermentation, thus respecting the expression, richness, and nuances of each plot. The maceration period lasts for 20 to 25 days. 12 months in oak barrels renewed by one third each year.
Tasting notes
The wine immediately seduces with a beautiful deep ruby color and an elegant nose with fine notes of red fruits and spices. On the palate, the frank attack reveals a round and classy wine with delicious aromas of fruits and vanilla on well-melted, ample, and velvety tannins.
Food pairing
Serve with grilled red meat, cheese or with chocolate cake.
