history
The Cave des vignerons de Tavel is in the purest Provençal style. It was built in 1937 when Tavel wines were labelled AOC. It is to date the only winery to be opened by a President of the Republic – Albert Lebrun in 1938. The Cave de Tavel produces half of the Tavel AOC wines, as well as Lirac, Côtes-du-Rhône Villages and Côtes-du-Rhône and stretches over 680 Ha..There are 140 producers, all involved in the day-to-day life of the winery and have their say in the investment decisions for making wines which frequently win medals and are regularly mentioned in wine guide.
Vineyard
Tavel is in the Rhone Valley 15km from Avignon and Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Its geographical position in the heart of the Tavel vineyards on the edge of the village is an indication of its deep local roots. Smooth pebbles. Vines : 35 years old - 17 Ha - Yield : 40 Hl/Ha
Winemaking
Tavel is a unique rosé produced by a type of vinification which makes it completely different from any other rosé and is more like that of a red wine with long maceration of 48 to 72 hours. After pressing, fermentation takes 10 to 15 days at low temperature (13-14°C). Vinification and storage in stainless steel vats before bottling.
Tasting notes
Deep dense pink- Explicit aromas of strawberry and cherry. Mouth: velvety and spicy, great fullness and delicacy. It is a blend of drip juices which give it the requisite aromas, fruit, freshness and acidity, and pressing juices which preserve its richness, structure and strength.
Food pairing
Goes well with a meal , especially duck à l'orange, spicy Asian food, sushi, almond tajine, paellas, Provençal dishes, white meats and dry goat's cheese.
Aging potential
Drink while young. 1 to 3 years.
Grape varieties
50% Grenache, 35% Syrah, Mourvèdre, Cinsault and Carignan, 15% Clairette, Picpoul and Bourboulenc.

The darkest ruby of the 13 samples I received from the industrious Cave Les Vignerons de Tavel & Lirac, the 2022 Tavel Cuvee Royale kicks off with notions of crushed stone, lime zest and macerated berries. It's full-bodied, concentrated and richly textured, with a long, citrus and berry finish that could actually use a few months to smooth out. As it's sealed with the same plastic stopper as the rest of the rosés from this producer, I wouldn't recommend cellaring beyond a year or so, but it might very well show better in six to nine months.
