The Fruitière Vinicole d’Arbois was one of the very first cooperative wineries to be established in France. It was founded on 4 January 1906, at the instigation of 26 wine-growers from Arbois, in the wake of the phylloxera blight, when the aphid-like pest nearly wiped out French vines. The project was initiated for the purpose of resisting competition from inferior wines without designated origins. Determined to offer consumers the best of the wines of the Jura region, the cooperative chose to remunerate its vintners based on the quality of the grapes they supplied, by carrying out a strict selection. This collective approach of the pursuit of excellence contributed to Arbois wines being attributed the very first French AOC (Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée). The AOC Arbois was followed by the AOC Côtes du Jura.
Vineyard
Soil: Clay-limestone soils embracing the slopes of blue, gray, and red marls. Vines facing south/southeast. The vineyards are generally located on slopes of varying steepness, predominantly facing west/southwest. The altitude ranges between 250 and 400 meters. The vines are planted at a density of 11 to 16 plants per acre, pruned in the double Guyot style, and trellised. They are at least partially grass-covered.
Winemaking
Destemming; pneumatic pressing; alcoholic fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks at 75.2°F (24°C). Aging: Over 75 months, this wine slowly matures in oak barrels under a yeast veil, developing into a Vin Jaune (yellow wine), a culmination of this patient maturation.
Tasting notes
Appearance: Deep yellow with silver reflections.
Nose: Complex aromas of walnuts, fresh hazelnuts, "undergrowth," and curry.
Palate: Structure and elegance highlight walnut and curry flavors.
Food pairing
Yellow wine chicken (Poularde au vin jaune) with morels, foie gras, aged Comté cheese, or, more surprisingly, Roquefort cheese. Exotic dishes are enhanced by the curry aromas. Service: Ideally, open 24 hours in advance.
