Pierre Amadieu - Gigondas
Red,Gigondas
85% Grenache 15 % Syrah.
history
The Amadieu family settled in Gigondas in 1929. Pierre Amadieu, grandfather of the current winemaker, whose name is also Pierre, started the business with a small estate in Gigondas. In 1954, he had the opportunity to buy 280 acres that was not planted with vines. He gradually turned it into a vineyard, starting at the top of the hill at a place called "Grand Romane". Later he also planted vines halfway down the hill at the lieu-dit named "La Machotte". With these two domains, Pierre Amadieu is now known as a leading AOC Gigondas producer both in quality and quantity.
Vineyard
In the heart of the Gigondas area, the 40 hectares of the Grand Romane estate has been blessed by the gods and shaped by man for over 2000 years. The vineyards face north-west in a wonderful Provencal climate. The vines flourish at a height of around 400 metres on the slopes of the Dentelles de Montmirail hills where the typical Rhone Valley Syrah and Grenache grapes are healthier and riped later. Blue gravely marl. Vines : 60 years - 8ha - Yield : 22 Hl/Ha
Winemaking
Late harvesting; selection of the ripest bunches in the vineyard and on arrival at the winery; intensive vinification (vatting for one month and delestage) to extract all the delicacy and strength. The elegance conferred by maturing 24 month in barrels and 1 year in a bottle blends with the discreet woodiness from the tuns and brings out the complex aromas of the noble Rhone varieties.
Tasting notes
Deep and dark in colour with an intense complex nose of jammy fruit (plum, fig) prefiguring a silky mouth where delicate aromas of red fruit intermingled with the potency of jammy black fruit, bay and leather blossom into a superb finish of pepper and spice.
Food pairing
A perfect match for flavourful dishes in a sauce or duck pâté.
Aging potential
Forget about it for a decade and drink at room temperature (about 17°C).
Grape varieties
85% Grenache 15 % Syrah.

2021
The flagship from this terrific estate is the 2021 Gigondas Le Pas De L'Aigle, which is mostly Grenache that sees a longer élevage in oak. It shows the more mid-weight style of the vintage yet has beautiful black raspberry and ripe berry fruits, medium body, good mid-palate depth, and ripe, balancing tannins. It's beautifully done, and while it will offer pleasure in its youth, this has enough structure to evolve gracefully in the cellar.
