history
More than just another structure on the French wine scene, Rhonéa is a sort of "sacred union" between two well-known and quality-oriented cooperatives, the Vignerons de Caractère in Vacqueyras and Vignerons de Balma Venitia in Beaumes de Venise. Rhonéa initially achieved this unification with crus from the southern Côtes du Rhône, merging generations of history and strong identities into a single entity. Putting a lie to outmoded clichés and prejudices concerning cooperative cellars, Rhonéa is the successful merging of two cellars that decided to build their future together in a spirit of innovation. Rhonéa brings together 236 estates situated around the Dentelles de Montmirail – a mythical location where the crus of Gigondas, Vacqueyras, and Beaumes de Venise are found.
Vineyard
The vines are located on the "Plateau des Garrigues" between Vacqueyras & Sarrians. Grenache on alluvial deposits and Syrah on clay-limestone soils. This year’s climatic events have upset the work of our winegrowers. Frost, hail & rains did not spare the region. This vintage will be remembered for being atypical, but also for resulting in qualitative, fresh, lush and tasty wines with limited volumes.
Winemaking
Hand harvest. Grapes are vinified separately to preserve the characteristics of each variety. Syrah grapes are aged in "Foudres" and 225l-oak barrels (1-3 years) for 6 to 8 months before final blending.
Tasting notes
Intense ruby color with brilliant reflections. Floral nose with subtle notes of violet at first, then light notes of strawberries. Fleshy and rich mouth, still well-balanced. Elegant and silky tannins.
Food pairing
Meats in sauce, vegetables with tomato sauce, roasted in the oven at a low temperature...

2021
A blend of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre, the 2021 Vacqueyras Castellas Vieilles Vignes comes across as slightly rubbery and asphalt-like at first, but plum and raspberry fruit emerge with air. It's medium to full-bodied and velvety textured, with a long finish. It's a solid effort from the local co-op.
