Chanfreau Family - Haut-Médoc
Red, Haut-Médoc
Cabernet Sauvignon : 50%, Merlot : 50%
history
The Chanfreau Family settled in Listrac-Médoc in 1962 when Léo purchased Château Fonréaud following his return from Algeria. A few months later, his father, Marcel Chanfreau, who also wished to settle in the Médoc, bought Château Lestage (neighbouring Fonréaud) and Château Caroline. Today, Marcel's grandson, Jean Chanfreau, runs the estates with his wife Marie-Hélène and his sister Caroline Chanfreau-Philippon. He bought Clos des Demoiselles in 2002. The family-owned vineyard covers 42 hectares in the commune of Listrac-Médoc and 9 hectares in the commune of Moulis en Médoc. The vines grow at the highest point in the Médoc, the Puy de Menjon, at an altitude of 43 metres.
Vineyard
More than 800 mm of rain fall over 6 months (equivalent to 12 months of rainfall). The vines take full advantage of this to grow well. By mid-June, a favorable weather window allows the flowers to bloom under optimal conditions. June marks the beginning of a dry and very hot summer: Three months of summer without any rain. Their clay-limestone soils were a lifesaver, preventing the vines from experiencing the water stress that these conditions could have caused. A beautiful autumn allows them to reach optimal maturity. The warm, sunny days and cool nights, which refine the tannins, enable them to harvest until October 17.
Winemaking
Alcoholic fermentations were made by focusing on the extraction of the fruit. The wines are colorful, have a beautiful structure with soft tannins, suggesting a very nice evolution in bottle. The mouth is full, both lively, round and melted.
