history
The Luc Pirlet estate is located in the Languedoc Roussillon, the largest wineproducing region in France. Luc is fortunate in having his vineyard in the greatest part of this region which combines the advantages of the Mediterranean and Atlantic climates near the Pyrenean mountains. As a result, the wines produced have the fruitiness given by the south-facing Mediterranean hills, and a good level of acidity due to the high altitude of the hills on the Atlantic side.
Vineyard
Between the villages of Carcassonne and Limoux, near the Pyrenean mountains, not far from the Spanish border. Different plots of soils made up of sandstone, schist and chalk and clay. Vines: 20 years old - 60 acres - Yield: 48 Hl/ha - 2.9T. per acre.
Winemaking
Harvested when perfectly ripe. Grapes are destemmed and fermented for 3 weeks at 80°F. Frequent pumping-over. Maturing in French oak barrels 1/3 brand new (2/3 from Bordeaux - 1/3 from Burgundy). Malolactic fermentation in barrel.
Tasting notes
Lots of strong fresh fruit on the palate, masterfully blended to create a balance and delicacy unusual in a wine at this price. Plenty of ripe plum and soft fleshy fruit. Medium-bodied.
Food pairing
On its own, but goes well with grilled poultry, pasta dishes and veal.

2021
The 2021 Reserve Merlot begins with aromatics of dark cherries and plums woven together with spices, earthy tones and hints of vanilla nuances. On the palate this possesses medium body with fine tannins which are underlined by a nice touch of minerality. Flavors of cherries, plums and spices continue to leave an impression on the finish.
